Following the tsunami that struck Sri Lanka in 2004, members of The Association for Kids In Need (AKIN) travelled to the island to assist with the recovery efforts. Due to the connection between AKIN and SIS, this ultimately led to SIS undertaking a child sponsorship program in Hikkaduwa, close to Galle in the south west of the island.

The sponsorship paid for the education costs for a number of children affected by the tsunami. During a site visit in 2013, members of the team were able to meet with many of the sponsored children and also provided assistance to a home for people with special needs.
