In the following years Sri Gurudev's Eastern base was in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) as head of Satchidananda Tapovanam (Ashram). In addition, he served and organized Yoga centers in India and throughout East Asia. Then in 1966, at the invitation of an American seeker, Sri Gurudev came to the United States for a short visit. In response to the sincere requests of many eager American students, he extended his stay and ultimately became a U.S. citizen.
Sri Swami Satchidananda was a highly respected spiritual teacher with devotees around the world. His message was peace, both individual and universal. Sri Gurudev is Founder of the Integral Yoga ® Institutes with centers throughout North America as well as in Europe and India. Inspired by his vision of a Yoga community which would be a model of harmony and spiritual growth, his disciples have founded four Satchidananda Ashram - Yogavilles.
Sri Gurudev accepted invitations to speak around the world, and held office in many international Yoga organizations and ecumenical groups. His ecumenical dream of a sanctuary for people of all faiths, the LOTUS, Light Of Truth Universal Shrine, is located at Satchidananda Ashram - Yogaville in Virginia.
On August 19, 2002 in South India, Sri Swami Satchidananda took Mahasamadhi by leaving his physical body. He told all his disciples, "I will always be with you in Spirit. Even if my body is not there, you will never be without me."
